Fake Rolex Watches are an Epidemic

In 1980, the Swiss watchmaker Rolex introduced the Replica Rolex Yachtmaster, which had a self-winding mechanical movement and a date display at 3 o’clock.

One of these counterfeiters was Constantine Markarian from Armenia, who made fake Rolexes out of old watch parts and some resin for the dial. He would then sell them in his local market for about $2 each.

As someone who enjoys collecting Rolex watches, I know it can be challenging to differentiate the real ones from the fakes. The following are some easy ways to identify a genuine Rolex.

1) A Rolex should be equipped with an Oyster bracelet which is featured on all models.
2) A Rolex is made of 904L stainless steel, which has a platinum-like finish and is known for being corrosion resistant.
3) The watch should have a screw-down caseback that protects the movement from dust and moisture.
4) It has no date function but allows you to use words such as “Chronometer” or “Officially Certified” at the bottom of the watch caseback.
5) The crystal face of a Rolex is specially treated.
